Cabaret is a critically acclaimed American musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff. It premiered on Broadway on November 20, 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The show has since been revived multiple times on Broadway and in London’s West End and inspired the 1972 film adaptation starring Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli. The story is set in Berlin, 1929–1930, during the twilight of the Weimar Republic as the Nazi Party rises to power. The city’s vibrant, hedonistic nightlife contrasts sharply with the growing political tension and antisemitism.
