Vanya and Sonya have spent their whole lives working tirelessly for Sonya's father's estate. Professor Alexander (Sonya's sick father), and his young wife, Yelena return to the farm seeking treatment from a local doctor and friend of the farm, Astrov. The guests bring with them a world of chaos. Convoluted romantic entanglements, yearning, and distractions from work ensue. Uncle Vanya explores disillusionment and the intertwined nature of hope and despair through a funny, human, and occasionally over intellectual point of view.
